What’s Happening in 2027?
By the end of 2027, the UK will be switching off the old landline telephone network (known as the Public Switched Telephone Network or PSTN).
This means:
- Traditional hardwired phone lines will no longer work.
- Calls will be made over the internet instead — this is called digital voice or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
What This Means for You
If you currently:
- Plug your home phone directly into the wall socket, OR
- Use a care alarm, pendant alarm, or telecare device that connects to your phone line
…you will need to change how your phone system works.
From 2027 onwards, your home phone will be connected through your broadband router (the same box that gives you Wi-Fi).
How It Will Work
- You will still have a home phone number.
- Your phone will plug into the back of your broadband router, not the wall socket.
- You will still be able to call friends, family, and emergency services.
- If you have no broadband at the moment, your phone company will help you get set up.
Important Considerations
Power Cuts
- Old landlines worked even if the power went out.
- Digital phones need electricity — so if there’s a power cut, your phone won’t work unless you have a battery backup.
- Ask your phone provider about backup options.
Care Alarms & Emergency Devices
- If you use a fall detector, pendant alarm, or other device linked to your phone line, it may need upgrading.
- Contact your alarm provider now to check it will work with a digital line.
Internet Connection
- Even if you don’t use a computer or tablet, you’ll need broadband for your home phone.
- Your provider can supply the right equipment and may be able to visit to help set it up.
How to Prepare
- Check with your provider: They’ll explain your options and arrange the changeover.
- Test your equipment: Especially care alarms — don’t wait until 2027.
- Ask for help: Providers can send an engineer or offer extra support if you’re not confident setting things up.
Reassurance
You won’t be left without a phone. Providers are responsible for making sure your service continues — and there will be help available to guide you through the change.
