A Day of Farewell
As Ms. B’s carer, Violet had the privilege of supporting her and her family through her final journey. On the day of her funeral, everything was arranged with such grace. By 11:30, the family and close friends were all seated at the crematorium. The atmosphere was dignified yet deeply personal, filled with love and respect for Ms. B.
Her son, took the role of spokesperson. As a playwright, his words were beautifully crafted — poetic, full of emotion and rich with detail. His speech captured the very essence of Ms. B’s life, weaving her story into something unforgettable.
Recognition of Carers
What moved me most was the heartfelt acknowledgment of the professional carers. Ms. B’s son spoke openly about the compassion and dedication shown by Country Cousins carers, not just in Ms. B’s home but also beyond it. Each carer was mentioned by name and in that moment, I felt truly seen and valued.
The son, gave special recognition to me, Violet. He reflected not only on my availability and presence for his mother, but on something much more personal — the way I shared Ms. B’s cherished family recipe with my own community in Kenya.
Passing on a Legacy
Ms. B, had learned how to bake her grandmother’s fruit cake at the age of 12. That recipe had been passed down through her family for more than 250 years. During my time with Ms. B, she entrusted me with this tradition and I, in turn, shared it with my family and the women in my village back home in Kenya.
Today, it is known there as “Ms B’s Fruit Cake.” The laughter and applause during the speech when her son shared this story reminded us all of how Ms. B’s memory now extends far beyond her home. Her legacy lives on in a very real and joyful way.
A Warm Goodbye
After the service, I was embraced by countless members of her family and friends. Their hugs, gratitude and warmth filled me with a sense of belonging.
We gathered afterwards for lunch at Ms. B’s and her husbands home. It was during this time, when I walked into the cottage for the final time, that the emotions overwhelmed me. It was a moment of closure — bittersweet and tender.
Caring for Ms. B was more than a role; it was a journey of shared traditions, love and respect. The funeral not only celebrated her life but also honoured the bond between carers and the families we serve.
