What are the live-in care options?
Country Cousins offers three main types of live-in care:
- Standard live-in care
For individuals or couples who need day-to-day support at home - Advanced live-in care
For individuals or couples with more complex medical or personal care requirements - Night support
For those who need help, reassurance or supervision throughout the night
Each service is tailored to the individual, ensuring you only pay for the level of care required.
What costs are involved in live-in care?
All details are agreed in advance, so you know exactly what to expect before committing to anything.
The cost of live-in nursing care or specialist live-in support can vary depending on the level of assistance required, but the main elements of pricing typically include the following:
Lifetime registration fee
We charge a one-off registration fee when you register with us. This covers our initial consultation, set-up requirements and helps maintain an active pool of carers able to provide care in as little as 48 hours.
Carer fee
We offer guidance around the recommended rates for a carer’s service. As all Country Cousins carers are self-employed, they will invoice you directly for their services, and you are responsible for paying the carer at the end of each week.
Agency fee
The agency fee is charged by Country Cousins to ensure we continue to match our clients with suitable and trusted live-in carers on an ongoing basis.
Travel allowance
Carers charge for the cheapest method of travel to your home, whether this is a second-class return rail ticket or current HMRC mileage rates. All travel expenses will be agreed before care begins.
Bank holidays
Bank Holiday rates for both carers and Country Cousins vary. This is standard across the care sector.
Additional components
In some cases, extra help may be required overnight. Carers may charge a waking fee if they are required to be awake and alert during the night. Clients are also typically expected to cover the cost of the carer’s food and household utilities (energy, wifi and other living costs).
What affects the cost of live-in care?
The cost of live-in care can vary depending on several factors. Because every person’s needs are different, the level of support required will influence the final cost.
Some of the key factors include:
- Level of care required – Light companionship and help with daily tasks may cost less than specialist care for complex conditions such as dementia or Parkinson’s.
- Overnight support – If a carer needs to remain awake during the night to provide support, additional waking night fees may apply. This can influence the overall 24 hour live in care cost.
- Location – Costs may vary slightly depending on where you live in the UK and the availability of carers in your area.
- Specialist experience – Some situations require carers with additional training or clinical experience, which may affect the overall cost of live-in nursing care.
Our care advisors will explain all costs clearly before care begins so you can make an informed decision with complete transparency.
Live-in care vs visiting care costs
When comparing care options, it can be helpful to understand the differences between visiting care and live-in care.
| Type of Care | Typical Structure | Key Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Visiting care | Short visits throughout the day | Suitable for people who need occasional support with specific tasks |
| Live-in care | One dedicated carer living in the home | Continuous support, companionship and greater reassurance |
Visiting care may appear less expensive at first, particularly if only a small amount of support is required. However, as care needs increase and multiple daily visits become necessary, costs can quickly rise.
Live-in care offers consistent one-to-one support, companionship and continuity, allowing individuals to remain safely in their own home with a familiar carer. For many families, the reassurance and quality of life this provides represent significant value.

Funding live-in care
There are several ways to fund live-in care depending on your financial situation and care needs. While many people pay privately, there may also be financial support available.
Local authority funding
Your local council may contribute towards the cost of care following a financial assessment. Eligibility depends on your savings, assets and level of care needed.
NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)
If care needs are primarily health related, you may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. This funding covers the full cost of care and is arranged through the NHS following an assessment.
Attendance Allowance
Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care. It can be used to contribute towards the cost of care at home.
Direct payments
If your local authority agrees to fund part of your care, you may receive direct payments. This allows you to arrange and manage your care services yourself.
If you are unsure what support you may be entitled to, our care advisors can help guide you through the options. For more information, visit our Financing and Funding Care Hub.
